Every woman during pregnancy stays careful not to catch cold or any other diseases. But no one is fully immune and sometimes it might happen that you are not feeling that much well or maybe you are having an allergy. You will think about taking medications but here you must know one thing and that is, not all medications are safe to take during your pregnancy. Some of them can have negative reactions but there are some which are safe to consume. So, here are some drugs in pregnancy that you can take.
Medications for Allergy
You can suffer from an allergy anytime especially if you come in touch with something that you know you are allergic to. Well, in that case there are some antihistamines that are safe to take like chlorpheniramine, loratadine and diphenhydramine. These antihistamines will treat symptoms like sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose and coughing. There are some nasal sprays like oxymetazoline that can be taken but you still need to consult your doctor.
Medications for Cold and Flu
If you get a cold during your pregnancy months, the first thing that you should try is the non-drug remedies. Drink a lot of fluids and take enough rest. If you feel a stuffiness in your nose, then you can try using the saline nasal sprays. You can also gargle with saline water if you have a sore throat. But if the cold is bad, then you will have to take medications. Medicines like Vicks cough syrup, Tylenol and Trind-DM can be taken. There are some variations of Robitussin that can be taken too but there are some that cannot, so it is best to consult your doctor first.
Medications for Constipation
The hormone progesterone usually hampers with the smooth movement of bowels and many women face the problem of constipation while they are pregnant. Firstly, you should increase your intake of fiber and drink a lot of fluids. You can also take laxatives and stool softeners Metamucil, Milk of Magnesia, Citrucil, and Fibercon.
Medications for Heartburn and Indigestion
The smooth muscle cells in your body are affected by progesterone in your body and thus the sphincter between your oesophagus and stomach gets relaxed which, in turn, causes the acid to rise up and cause heartburn. Eat more frequent and smaller meals. You should try over-the-counter remedies because they are not that strong. Steer clear of spicy foods otherwise the condition will only become worse.
Medications for Pain
Headaches and muscle pain are quite common in pregnancy and you can do some cold compress because it helps. In case of graver situations, you can take acetaminophen. Pain medicine for pregnancy is quite tricky because some of them affect the amniotic fluid and so a consultation with your doctor is a must.
The dosage of any medicine should be minimum and as less as possible only to keep your symptoms under control especially for your pre-existing medical conditions. But, if you are not sure about any medication, don’t try to do anything on your own and always consult your doctor first.
